September 11th 1947 Thursday

Went tracting on new side of road in mud. We called at ten houses for the firs time. We had fine luck, having one conversation, selling one B of M and Loaning one. I was kind of sick after breakfast. I cooked it myself so it couldn't have been poisoned. I thought I was going to  heave while tracting, but it didn't happen. We worked a little on getting these lazy Brazilians started on the Pres.'s trailer, immediately after tracting. After lunch, which I ate very little of, we had a gospel class, then Elders Smith, Jensen and I went to town and ran around concerning the carteiras a while. After supper, which I so horribly cooked, Elder Jensen and I practiced our duet, then retired.

September 10th 1947 Wednesday

It is a luminous dial sway second hand 15 Joule shock absorbent waterproof non-magnetic thiel it's a very good watch and I paid a very good price 800 Brazilian money after lunch I wrote more letters and prepared a testimony for tomorrow I'll probably have to read it mutual as hell tonight at which elder pool and I showed a couple of movies I am dog tired tonight for some reason or other I don't feel like I'm good for anything

September 4th 1947 Thursday

it was rainy almost all morning I got up at 6 and finished preparing my speech after breakfast we started to go tracking but discovered it was raining too hard I worked on what I will say at Sunday school next Sunday all morning we had lunch at Rachel's at noon it was a good meal as usual they really treat us wonderful after lunch we went to the police station to work on our cartoon has more but it was closed potato I don't know they must have figured out another holiday some way all afternoon I translated my speech on the Bible after supper we went visiting the first lady wasn't home so we tried another how their pool and Smith were already there and we're showing movies that was very embarrassing so we left and waited through the mud out to yata routes and had a very good visit I got a comb to from San Paulo today that puts my financial situation on top

September 3rd 1947 Wednesday

Got up early and built a fire for breakfast we went out tracking. We sold a book of Mormon to a lady in our beat, also loaned a German book of Mormon to another lady. Then we started down the other side of the street it was a new area we found most of the people there congenial I tried my first house I kind of flopped I was unlucky enough to get a curious lady and when she asked a question I couldn't understand her so other Jensen had to take over we had a gospel class after lunch and then ran around a while concerning cortadas after supper we all four went over to are dock of the keys to help celebrate Lola's birthday. We played ping-pong then elder pool showed some movies after that was refreshments I ate cake and malts coffee till I thought I'd burst. Elder Smith couldn't tell them he didn't want to any and really got the works I had a good time and learned a little more Portuguese

September 2nd 1947 Tuesday

Got up early and began writing another speech. This one is on the 8th article of Faith it should be a pretty good one we went rafting down the East and again every time we get down there where there's no cement it is just after a big rain we slipped and slid around for an hour or two till we finished up I came back and worked on my speech while other Jensen went to the dentist after lunch we had gospel study class we finish the book of ether then the rest of the afternoon was spent running around starting on elder Smith's in my car tetas in finishing up on the contract for the apartment games like cards something it seems mania is the principal word around here after supper we visited

September 1st 1947 Monday

Raining and very wet all day, so we couldn't go tracking. I practiced reading the Portuguese book of Mormon for a while, wrote a couple of letters, one to Paul asking for advice on the Scout organization, and did my share in the kitchen. all afternoon elder Jensen and I were running around seeing about the contract for the apartment, the president's trailer in my car Terra. we didn't do anything in the evening, just shot the breeze a bit and work some more on reports.

Thursday, January 8, 1970

Thirty One August 1947 Sunday

got up and started finishing the translation of my speech. I passed the sacrament at Sunday school. It rained almost all day. We held another cottage meeting at dona polina's in the afternoon. Our little kids were running around barefoot in the mud. I don't see why they weren't sick this Sunday, too. I had trouble staying awake all day. I worked on my speech from after we got back to the church time. And priesthood meeting I received the assignment to conduct a Sunday school next week. Such a deal! in church I administer the sacrament. I took the bread from the first items and gave my talk. I received several compliments on it. Yeah, fell Burr said I had very good pronunciation. Xenon de Paula Bueno.

30 August 1947 Saturday

I overslept until 8 this morning. Elder bow and left at 6:30 on the omnibus. Elder Jensen went down with him. Other Jensen and I went down to leave it Aria Geek known to sign the contract after breakfast. We partly finished, but need a witness. Right after lunch we all four went to the cine Avenida and saw was meliodas anyos dinosa vida. It was very good. it was the first movie I've seen in Brazil. It only cost 7 cruzeiros. Immediately after the show elder Jansen and I carry chairs back to the velocity oohs and order cows keys while elder pool and other Smith fool around of course, elder Smith was the junior companion. Today was mutual it went off fairly good. We didn't have a very good crowd, however. Matilda felber took charge. Elder Jensen and I teamed up and gave them a lot time with a guessing game. They couldn't catch on.

29 August 1947 Friday

When tracking, had fair look. On our way home we carry chairs from the church for our party. all afternoon we were running around getting things bought and fixed for the party. We had a wonderful time. There were 28 members and friends. We played several parlor games and made Taffy and popcorn balls. Everyone had a good time, I think. I certainly did. I did all right with my Portuguese. Told elder Bond goodbye. He leaves at 6:30 in the morning I hate to see him leave.

28th August 1947 Thursday

went to acting. Didn't have such good luck. People would listen, all right, but that's about all. It was our day in the kitchen, again, and I managed to cut another piece out of my thumb. This makes the third time I've cut myself since we've taken this apartment I'm still having a little trouble with my feet. My little toe doesn't bother me now, but my heel and Arch does. This afternoon we visited the Gertrude core data. I nearly went to sleep and a couple of times and she asked if I was doente. We also visited sister siegrist who is down with the rheumatism. She was better today. After supper other Jensen and I visited mister Katie and got the contract from him his wife talked to us he wasn't there.

27 August 1947

got up at 6 and worked on my speech. We had a very successful day of attracting today. We loaned a book of Mormon, soul, and had six conversations.I worked on my speech before lunch and we had gospel study class after lunch. Then I worked on my speech again until shortly after 6 when I went to the Omni bus station to meet elder Smith. After greeting him and showing him the way home, elder Jensen and I curing his trunk on our shoulders, I typed up my speech ready for translating. This was a very busy and very heavy Day for me. There's real joy in the work when you keep busy.

26 August 1947 Tuesday

Went tracking. We had very poor luck. Hardly anyone was home. Those that were home weren't very interested. We only had one conversation. we were going to go back and track some more after lunch, but instead we had a gospel class. we are studying the book of ether. All afternoon I worked on preparing my talk all spinning all speak on Divine authority it was elder Jensen's and my day in the kitchen again. We received a telegram saying that elder Smith will be the new elder and he will arrive tomorrow night on the omnibus.

25 August 1947 Monday

Today was another Brazilian holiday soldiers day. Every time they feel an extra walk on Keen say is in order, they declare a holiday. I studied Portuguese and search for material for my talk all day. Elder Jensen and Bowen went out to sister serious and blessed her.

24 August 1947 Sunday

Got up and cooked breakfast, then studied the sacramental blessing on the water.at Sunday school I administer the sacrament for the first time in Portuguese. I think I did pretty good. Other Jensen and I held a cottage meeting with Dona Paulina again. We began the book of Mormon. Her two youngest children had colds and looked pretty sick. It was raining all day and very cold, so it was no wonder, in that open house. I'm talking about that she is a good lady. Instead of just reading the first five chapters in the first book of nephi through once prior to the class she had read them three times. At church I again administered the water. Other Jensen wisdom mean speaker another Bowen gave a farewell speech. I was assigned to talk for church next Sunday night.

23 August 1947 Saturday

went to town this morning and shopped by myself. I found a ranco I liked so I do the guy down and got it for 400 Cruiser. It is a very nice one. The song books arrived from San Paulo. I wrote some letters in the afternoon. At night was mutual, so I wore my new raincoat. The weather has turned cold and rainy again. It feels rather good. I was afraid the heat was really here. This afternoon I also transfigured a box into a bed table. It is really quite nice.

22 August 1947

Went to acting out in the sticks. It was a Dusty, long drawn-out eat. we rode the seminerio bond to the end of the line, then started from there. It was clear out in the pines. The beat has been worked over pretty well, and we only could get five calls in. The first house was occupied by The watchman at the post office. He invited us in and we talked about everything except religion. During the afternoon I went downtown with my two dictionaries and bought suspenders, a shoe brush and the camera it was a lot of fun other brohm received his transfer tonight. Need to leave as soon as his replacement arrives.

21 August 1947 Thursday

worked all day on the guad the rope has except the afternoon late. Then other Jensen and I went down town, mailed some letters and looked at raincoats for me. We went in several stores and it was practically funny to watch the local merchants demonstrating the usefulness of the product. In the evening we straighten up a room and caught up on our records. The guarda roupas are finished except for screws in the drawers and paint and curtains.

20 August 1947 Wednesday

went tracking again. We loaned another book of Mormon. It is getting so I can understand everything other Jensen says when we're out tracking. Usually I can tell what the other people say, too. Such progress. Again we worked on the guad ropa the rest of the day it was nearly finished. We had the duty again today, also a language class in the morning. We made so much noise building the clothes Walker that a man from the apartment below came up and gave other Jensen the word.

19 August 1947 Tuesday

When tracking in the morning. We loaned a book of Mormon and had a fair day. The mornings are nice now not to be hot or cold. The afternoons are getting a little uncomfortable, though. All afternoon and evening elder Jensen and I worked on our Guatemala ropas. I bought an English Portuguese and a Portuguese English dictionary. No maybe I can give these people the word. I received my money from the mission home. It was badly needed.

18 August 1947 Monday

elder Jensen and I had the kitchen duty today, so we got up and fix breakfast quick. Then we went to acting. It was a lovely morning not too warm or cold. We worked on Brewer presidente get you Leo Vargas play the calvary camp. We had a few nice visits and a couple of not-so-nice refusals. After tracking I rushed back to the apartment to start the fire and cut the vegetables for stew and elder Jensen went to town to get a couple of duplicate keys made of course, dinner was a howling success. After dinner I wrote a letter and then went to town to shop we also got the lumber for our guarda roupas. as soon as supper was finished we made a visit to the two tricks sister's place. We had a nice visit with Helen.

Seventeen August 1947 Sunday

attended meetings nearly all day. Sunday school in the morning, and I passed the sacrament. Then, during the afternoon we invited Dona Paulina with elder ordakowski. I couldn't understand a word that was said we walked all the way up and back so my feet hurt sufficiently. At about 5 elder Jensen and I went to visit the ordakowski and then to priesthood meeting. After that was church and then back home.

16 August 1947 Saturday

got up early this morning and went down to the market with elder Jensen. We bought all kinds of stuff. There is a vacant lot set aside just for the market here. It is beside processor feed identities. there are rows of wooden tables with canvas above them, and it is filled with people who bring their food stuff into cell. I wrote letters from after breakfast to nearly sundown. Then elder Jensen and I went to clean the church room. It was very dirty. After we finished we returned and got ready for mutual, then went to mutual. After meeting, the order cows keys came with us to see our new apartment. They are a wonderful family.

15 August 1947 Friday

Alarm went off at 5:30. We got up, ate a quick breakfast, and left for pito guate. when we arrived there, we went to Rachel's house there, and made that our headquarters. We played a few games, went for a few walks, and sat around and eat, talked and slept all day.it was nice out there, and I think Brazilian kids are pretty decent. They are friendly, eager to please, and very generous. We returned about 8 PM. The train was a wood burner and it looked like the 4th of July all the time out the window. Sparks were flying everywhere. They came in under the doors and through the roads through the cracks.elder Jensen and I went by the post office after arriving at Cody Tiba. Then I made a trip to the farmacia for some vapor rub for elder Bowen. He stayed here sick all day.

14 August 1947 Thursday

spent all day cooking and shopping. It was some trick getting the hot water in order. The hot water tanks are heated by pipes running through the stove. we're not very sure of ourselves yet. We ate lunch at Rachel's and had a swell time, of course. She in bisila and Adriana treat everyone like kings. They are the most generous people I've ever known. We had quote Sunday in quote gravy, mashed potatoes and all the trimmings.

13 August 1947 Wednesday

Add language class and mush. Then I went to the leaving out of you with other Jensen to see about the contract. Then I packed ready for moving. all afternoon we were running around and doing odds and ends. It must have been quite a sight to see elders pool, Bowen and I riding through the city in our best close a top a couple of cards piled with our gear. I had about as much fun on that ride grinning at pedestrians as I've ever had on any ride before. we bumped along at about walking speed behind an old nag. My new apartment is nice it's on the middle floor, east side. It has three bedrooms, living room, dining room, bathroom, kitchen and maid's quarters. During the afternoon I stayed at the apartment while the others stopped chopped. we all retire early because the candles were getting short. Our new beds are nice, judging by other Brazilian beds, but a little short for me. When I stretch out, I hurt my head.

12 August 1947 Tuesday

Add Portuguese class and breakfast, then went to acting. Man, it was cold. we went down a very muddy Street and slipped and slid and softly rebuked the road all morning. we had a good day, though. We loaned to book of Mormons and had several good conversations. We nearly froze to death though. My fingers and toes were so cold as they've ever been. Elder Jensen's tea with chatter whenever he talked to people. At one house we had a very hard time getting a word in, however. The Catholic Dona was building up her faith she was also building upstairs, but she didn't know it. We finally had to knock off a few minutes early, because of because it was so cold and we couldn't talk fluently. In the afternoon we helped the large apartment deal fall through, then we discovered an even better place. I haven't seen it yet, but elders Jensen and pool say it's really okay. Will probably end up moving tomorrow. Elder Bowen and I purchase the sheets and blankets to a and had them delivered.elk in the lad came with them, I was all alone here., So I really had a rough time trying to give the kid a tip. Finally, after 15 minutes or so, he got away with 10 cruzeiros. After supper elder Jensen and I wentvisiting to Gertrude Coronado's again. We found her home this time, and we had a very nice gospel conversation with her. Of course, I had to play the role of sitting bull again. These people get quite a kick out of my lack of Portuguese. They think it's pretty funny. I don't agree with them. coming back to the pen sound Florida after the visit, we stopped in at the post office. I got seven letters. I had been haunting that place for a week or more, and only got my fingers Dusty from feeling in it. I really hit the jackpot. It was about as good as Christmas.

11 August 1947 Monday

Went house and furniture hunting again today with elder Jensen. We priced sheets, pillowcases, blankets and beds. We looked at an apartment about three blocks east of the post office. It rained about all day. during the afternoon I stayed here and in the pencil and studied. I typed up a list of a scriptures to study and then Mark them in my Portuguese Bible and the doctrine and covenants we had another pretty good meal at noon and Tito even bought elder Jensen and I each an extra piece of hamburger when we asked for more gravy. At night elder Jensen and I went to visit senora Gertrude cordero, but she wasn't home, so we returned. Elders bowing and pool are holding an English class tonight. I took my blue suit to the cleaners in the afternoon and the guy was very perturbed because we wouldn't let him use soap and water on it he was pretty dirty.

10 August 1947 Sunday

Got up a little late and prepared for Sunday School. we had about 10 people to services. I passed the sacrament. It was a pretty nice meeting. Other bow and taught the class. We had a good meal for once here in the pain sound. It was really good, and there was nearly enough. all afternoon I read and marked my Bible and read a little Portuguese. At church we had a better crowd 15. I bore my testimony and elder or tecosky translated for me. We had a very nice meeting. It was raining when we got out other Jensen tour taught the priesthood class and also spoken Church.

9 August 1947 Saturday

without even stopping for language class we hurried over to Rachel's to meet the agent for the large apartment. We've decided on that if the contract is okay we messed around all day looking at other apartments and seeing about this one. I was having trouble with my feet all day.just before Chow at night elder Bowen and I made a mad dash out to sister siegrist house for our laundry. We had to walk about a mile on a muddy, Rocky, and places steep, crummy road. We jumped ditches, fell in mud puddles, balanced our way across streams on pipes, waited through pastures and cheated on getting off the bond. it was sort of fun, but we were in an awful rush to get to mutual on time at am I a we sing a couple of songs, elder pool showed two movies and we had a good meeting. I had a little personal satisfaction from speaking to the members. I did fairly well. We had a nice meeting, and I I think everyone enjoyed themselves. I know by Selah did. He nearly knocked himself out on quote little Tom tinker in quote. He and Rachel and Edna are sure wonderful people. they've done in a mints amount for us already and now they want to make me a birthday cake. They will, too it is certainly terrible the way some Brazilians treat their countrymen. Several times while Rachel has been answering phones for us, Brazilians have told her to her face that they won't rent to Brazilians, only Americans. This country is about as low as they come, in the way of love and fellowship.

How about you 8th August 1947

I went after the milk for breakfast. The lady at the store on the corner probably thought I was nuts. I medley pointed at the milk and feverishly shook my head. She finally caught on, though. After language class, we all went house hunting again. After calling at a few places, and being hounded by horse blanket parentheses the negro that showed us the house on the hill and now wants 20 cruzados for his time and print the seas we told the agent for the love of the apartment on the hill to drop the contract. It still isn't definite, though. this evening we went to the nieces of Rachel's house and talked, sing, play the piano and had mate and refreshments. I suffered through the crap again. I can usually make sense out of the conversations now and I sometimes can make myself understood I happen to say that today is my birthday oh, and they all sing Happy birthday to me and Rachel spanked me. well one of the girls played quote it's been a long long time and quote barcelo remark that I looked blue. If you only knew. If he'd said homesick he'd have missed it, but as it was he hit it. we call quote horse blanket in quote that because that's exactly what he smells like. Elder pool and I ran into him twice in three blocks today. He came up to the room and we told him flatly we wouldn't pay him and he went off mad. I hope we hear no more for him.

7 August 1947 Thursday

immediately after breakfast we elder Jensen and I went to acting. It was my initial try. Except for the intense cold, it was a very enjoyable morning. Other Jensen carried on all the conversation, of course, and I did the recording. At each door he'd clap his hands, and sort of warm them, but I had my hands full. we had one very nice conversation with a girl, and we invited her to mutual. We also had a couple of refusals. We worked until we started having trouble with ladies getting dinner and then had to stop. Right after lunch we went to Rachel's and began seeing places to move to. All four of us were very busy all afternoon seeing places apartments and houses. after all we're weeded out, one apartment in the middle of town and one apartment near the governor's house remained outstanding. We nearly drove Rachel crazy running in and out all day. We made a few appointments for tomorrow morning, and then came back to the pain sound. Later on in the evening we definitely decided on the larger apartment near the governor's house, but it is to be a matter of prayer. The pain sound room looks pretty drab compared to what we've seen today.

6 August 1947 Wednesday

about 1 a.m. elders bowls, Rubens and wirthlin came in and woke us up and talk to us a while. Elder Jensen went with them and got everything straightened out. We all got up about 8 and 8, then went down to the hotel. All the missionaries met in elder Nelson's room and we chewed fat. elder Jensen and I came back to the pen sound about 11 and I read from the articles of Faith by Talmage. After Chow we went to the bus station and saw the brother and off. I read all lefter noon and at night we all four went visiting at yarra root olivetas. I could understand her better than anyone so far. We all drink some mate, of course, and I still can't go it.

Five August 1947 Tuesday

we started a Portuguese class this morning. It is from 7 to 8 AM. We also started a gospel study class from 12:30 to 1:30. We are taking up the book of Mormon. Elder pool arrived about 1. Finished Joseph, the prophet this morning. in the evening we went to meet the join Villa and Puerto alegre missionaries. They never did arrive. Their bus broke down about two hours away from here and they won't make it until about 1:30 am. Elder Jensen and I will get up to meet them.

For August 1947 Monday

we tidied up the room first thing this morning. Then I read half of Joseph the prophet while nearly freezing to death. While we cook breakfast it was slightly warm, but all day it was very cold. After lunch I studied Portuguese all afternoon. In the evening we three elders visited the day Paula family and the felber family. The bonds here are a scream. They nearly fall apart constantly and are always on the verge of jumping the track. I think the wheelbase is too short we bought a water filter today.

3 August 1947

Arose at 7. I showered, iron my suit and happened to remember I left half my stuff in South Paulo. we went to Sunday school and prepare the meeting house. It is just a little room in the side of a building. There is an attendance of 20 to 25 people. No one showed up. About 10:30 we decided no one would be there except the other Jensen, elder Bowen, and elder Gibson so we started meeting with only us three. We sing a song, I opened with prayer, and then we heard a knock on the door. A lady was there, sister segrest. So we forehead the sacrament song or elder Bowen fix the sacrament, then I pass the sacrament. Then other Jensen who is in charge of the meeting for his testimony, other Boeing for his, I bore mine and sister segrest for hers. We sang the closing song, other Jensen clothes with prayer, and that was that. We made reservations for the Porto alegre and join Villa elders who were coming through Tuesday, and had Chow. during the afternoon and evening, we visited Rachel, sister vellaccio, and the order cows keys. Then we returned to the pain song. At Rachel's I had my first try of mate. It was horrible. I didn't conceal my feelings for it much, so she gave me some cacao stuff instead. That wasn't much better, but I played like I liked it. Picky little boy

August 2nd 1947 Saturday

My alarm went off at 4:30. I finished packing and then woke up elder Bowen's. We took a taxi to the bus station. President Rex and elder gold rock elder Jensen to the station and sauce off. We sat right over the wheels and the seats were so close together that my knees hit constantly. we left the depot about 6 and I've never had such a wild ride before in my life. I thought Texas drivers were bad. We were bothered some my fog in the morning. Nearly all day we were traveling through Hill. Sometimes even mountains. The latter part of the ride was marked by beautiful views. We stopped at bonito for lunch. The trip would have been wonderful except my knees and ribs were sore from constantly hitting on something, and the fact that the driver went full-speed all day over the worst roads I've ever seen. Taking all into consideration it was a miserable day. We arrived at Curitiba about 8:30 p.m. and took a taxi to the pain sound Florida. With little waiting around, we went to bed, thoroughly tired. just after lunch, we were rounding a bend at high speed, of course, and met a truck doing the same. The window just behind me was shattered, our signal was torn off, in a portion of the bus was lost. It was certainly a close call.

1 August 1947 Friday

attended missionary meeting during morning. At lunch some elders came in and said there was a riot in the process of the sea. All day long mobs went all over sound Paulo tearing up street cars and buses and burning some. They got careless sometimes and wrecked private property, too. The city had hiked the fair on bonds and buses. The police were using rifles, pistols, swords and clubs on the mobs. President Rex ordered all missionaries to stay off the streets. Transportation was at 0. Trucks and cabs were doing all the transporting. sirens were wailing all day. At night things settled down, but the city still didn't reinstate the transportation. Most of the damage was done at the plaza the sea and the viaduct by the church, but every bus around town was attacked. Piles of glass laid all over the street. After supper I packed my suitcases for departure to Cody Tiba.

August 3rd. I learned today that 15 only buses were destroyed and practically all were damaged. One person was killed.

September 14th. It is reported that there still is practically no transportation in South Paulo. They had to quit holding one church service because the members can't attend. Trucks are doing almost all the transporting.

Thirty One July 1947 Thursday

Went on picnic at 9:30. We went to Santa oumara on bond, then on to a sort of country club in taxis. All day we played football, volleyball softball and eat. Some of the elders even went horseback riding. after dark who played a couple of games of volleyball and then sat around the fire and sing. It was a very enjoyable day, but I was very tired. Elder too and I had quite a time playing football.

30 July 1947 Wednesday

Finished report and testimony meeting in the morning, then heard president Rex speak. had our picture taken in the afternoon. At night I went to the mission home and bought books and helped out with preparations for the picnic tomorrow. Bought this journal during noon hour with elders Clark and Lewis.

29 July 1947 Tuesday

  • Another report and testimony meeting was held both morning and afternoon, with a lunch break in between. I spoke in the morning. The spirit of the Lord was very abundant, again. After the last meeting I purchased airmail stationery with elder McCauley help. just before noon president Rex announced our fields of labor. Elders Jensen, Bowen, fool and I resigned to Curitiba.

28th July 1947 Monday

It was raining when I woke up and didn't let up all day. We knew elders went to the mission home for the rest of our interviews. I completed mine, and went downtown with elder gold to cash my check. A missionary report and testimony meeting was held during the afternoon. There was a very marvelous Spirit presented at the meeting. elder Hilton and I, assisted by elders Lewis and baron bought a grammar book after meeting.

27th July 1947 Sunday

I rode to the school with President wrecks in the Jeep. I held the pulpit in the back seat. The first meeting was at 10. Some of the older elders spoke. I ate lunch at the school songs and hot dogs and then attended the German meeting at 1:30. At 3 the afternoon meeting was held and the elders gold, smith, boehm and I went looking around for some Chow. We had sandwiches and Guatemala at a kind of bar.then I bought a dozen bananas at a grocery store. A little farther down the street was a Catholic church and it was clear that something was going on inside. So, with seven bananas under my hat, we walked in and discovered it was a formal wedding just barely getting underway. We walked up to the front and took it all in. The priest said the usual stuff, I guess in Portuguese and then while the sacrament was being given them, a lady sing a song. The ceremony was quite impressive, but seemed sort of hollow. after the ceremony, the groom kissed the bride on the forehead and then they walked back down the aisle and into in anteroom.the church looked much like an art gallery. It was a lavishly painted and decorated and had many beautiful paintings hanging in it we had to hurry back to the school for the priesthood meeting. After the meeting was over elder Hilton went back to the grocery with me, and we bought bananas and oranges, then sat on a fence on the Main avenue and they ate them. It was lots of fun.

26 July 1947 Saturday

Another song practice in the morning. We gave the members a picnic at the school in the afternoon. we would have had fun except for the fact that the Brazilians aren't very fast at catching on to things, and the elders were the only ones who could learn how to play the games. Hot dogs were served at a cruzado each. in my estimation the picnic sort of flopped. Elder Hilton and I went to the mission home and I earned our clothes. At night a pageant was presented which, of course, I couldn't understand. We supplied the music for that, too.

25 July 1947 Friday

Slept on a straw tick for the first time, but by no means the last. We had a missionary meeting at 8:30. it was mostly song practice. President Rex started to interview us in the afternoon, but didn't get too far, due to interruptions. Elders to, bloomquist and I got stuck in the elevator this morning. More fun. we finally had to crawl out through the bottom. All the missionaries attended a dance at the school celebrating the entrance of the pioneers into the salt Lake valley. Of course, the elders couldn't dance. But we enjoyed watching the members dance. Arcoris sing a couple of numbers during intermission. We are catching on fast in the art of leaping on bonds, getting off at the right Plains and knowing where we're walking to. The language is a little different though.

24 July 1947 Thursday

We arrived at the Roosevelt station in San Paulo at 10:30. Elders Hilton, bloomquist, too and I took a taxi to the mission home while the other four watched the luggage. Sister Rex met us at the home and directed us to the church where a missionary meeting was being held. The president and every elder in the Brazilian mission was there. They greeted us as brothers and made us feel entirely welcome. each one sugar hands and greeted us. We had surprise them completely. They hadn't known when we were arriving. Elder gold took us to the senator hotel and obtained rooms for us. Then he went after the others. after we were all together again, we went to Chow at the pain sound that prosody say. Immediately after Chow I met my roommates, Elders Thomas and sellers. that afternoon we held a baptism at the sound Paulo Athletic club 7 members were baptized. that night a joint confirmation and 24th celebration was held at the church. It was held in Portuguese, however, as are all meetings where members are present. it seems we had arrived at the beginning of the first mission conference ever held in Brazil.

23 July 1947 Wednesday

Anchored in Rio harbor at 5 am. Sugarloaf and the city were on the port beam. Customs came aboard and checked our papers about 7:30. A launch took us and our bags ashore about 10. At 11 we passed customs with the help of Walsh the Brazilian passenger. We couldn't make ourselves understood. An old negro from the states assisted us to the railroad station and on to the train for a good price $15. After purchasing our tickets elders to, Hilton, boehm and I rode a street car around seeing the town. first it took us into a residential district filled with small dirty shops. Then it took us to the Waterfront close to the market. There we saw the fairies, airport and market. At the market we bought fruit parentheses oranges 3 cruzeiros, bananas to cruzados in parentheses. at 6 we got on the train. The seats in our car were new, but the car itself was ancient and made out of wood. At first we were powered by a diesel electric engine, but as soon as we got out of town we got a steam engine.
